ROC Care

ROC Care

ROC Care is focused on caring for the elderly and vulnerable living in our communities.
According to Andrew Harrop, director of Age Concern, a whole slice of our society is cut off from the mainstream of what makes life worth living for the rest of us, friendships, social contact and having fun.

700,000 people aged over 65 admit to being lonely most of the time.
600,000 leave their homes once a week or less.
500,000 spend Christmas day alone each year.

Behind the numbers, there are tens of thousands of distressing stories of increasing immobility, bereavement, cognitive decline, distant families and broken relationships, collectively adding up to a social epidemic we cannot ignore.
ROC Care can include a whole range of ideas including; meals, giving lifts, visiting, social events, shopping, trips out.

The project in this photo, the Care & Share project in Romiley, was featured at the ROC Showcase event in June 2010. This is one of a growing number of ROC partner projects.

Our consultation events have demonstrated the benefits of inter-generational work and we have been able to link the ROC Care concept with the ROC Cafe youth centres. Young people have benefitted from meeting some older members who have contributed to the learning curriculum by offering help with a variety of activities from cookery classes, bike maintenance, homework, board games, crafts, knitting, reading.
